Responsible AI in the media and cultural sector
This PhD-project explores ethnographically the ‘political life’ of AI in the media and cultural sector with the aim of expanding how we can understand the politics of AI. It aims to provide insights into new ways of researching and ensuring the development of responsible AI in this sector. The project will consist of several case studies that approaches the study of the political life of AI in two ways: the politics surrounding the uptake of AI and the politics of AI design. It will focus on the institutions that take part in constituting what a responsible future of AI should look like, such as funding institutions, legislators, and lobby organization and interrogate how they implement ‘responsibleness’. In order to map the politics of AI design other case studies will explore processes of experimentation, evaluation, and implementation of AI in media and cultural institutions.
The PhD Candidate behind this project is Anna Schjøtt Hansen who is based at the University of Amsterdam. She is supervised by Julia Noordegraaf and Tobias Blanke who are part of the Cultural AI Lab as well as Natali Helberger who (co-)leads the AI, Media & Democracy Lab. This project is funded from the AI4Media project, the CREATE Research Program and Lab and the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research.
